Plan Ahead: Space Heater Safety!

Do you rely heavily on a space heater?

Are you worried that relying on a space heater may cause your house to catch fire?

Do you follow space heater safety guidelines to help prevent a catastrophe?

According to the East Side Fire Department, “the most important facts in planning ahead, before a tragedy occurs include:

  1. Keep your smoke detector working at all times. Never remove the batteries. Saving the price of a battery is not worth deactivating one of the most valuable protection systems in your home. And don't forget to test your detector monthly!
  2. Keep a charged fire extinguisher handy at all times. However, if you have a fire that’s large or spreading rapidly, don’t try to extinguish it by yourself. Leave the house immediately and call 9-1-1.
  3. Practice family fire drills. If equipment is needed, such as a rope or a chain ladder to escape from a second-story window, purchase it as soon as possible and store it in a readily accessible place (under your bed, perhaps). Emphasize the importance of each family member escaping and meeting outdoors at a pre-selected location (such as sidewalk, mailbox, or curb) away from the fire.
  4. Memorize the emergency number for fire, emergency medical service and police response: 9-1-1. When you call this number from a safe location, know your address and the name of the closest intersecting street to your location. Remain calm. Do not hang up until the fire department tells you.
  5. Clear the fire hydrant of snow while cleaning your driveway and walkway to ensure easy access.

According to How Stuff Works, “To relight the pilot, follow the manufacturer's instructions exactly; they are usually fastened to the furnace. If instructions for relighting the pilot are not provided, follow this general procedure:

Step 1: Find pilot light assembly. It typically has a gas valve with on, off, and pilot settings.

Step 2: Turn valve to “off” and wait three minutes.

Step 3: Switch valve to pilot setting. Hold lighted match to pilot opening while you push reset button on pilot control panel. Keep this button pressed until pilot flame burns brightly, then set valve to “on” position.

Step 4: If pilot flame won't stay lit, the opening may be clogged. Turn gas valve “off”, and clean opening with piece of fine wire. If it won't stay lit after several attempts, you may have faulty thermocouple.”

If you’re still having problems lighting your pilot light, call a professional to help. All our technicians are highly trained professionals who continue their education through ongoing training, so they stay up to date to assure you the best service available.
