What is an Air Conditioner Compressor?

The compressor for your air conditioner is sometimes called “the heart of the unit”. It’s one of the key components, your air conditioning system won’t function without one. If your compressor fails, it can be costly to replace.

The compressor’s job is to compress refrigerant air through the system and remove heat and humidity from the air.

Problems with AC Compressors Can Be Prevented!

The most common problems with air compressors are:

  1. Dirty coils – Dust and grime build up on the condenser coil, and that causes the air conditioner to be unable to expel enough heat from the system. When your air conditioner runs constantly, the increased pressure can cause the compressor to overheat.
  2. Too much refrigerant – If you accidentally add too much refrigerant, or the wrong type of refrigerant, you can kill your compressor.
  3. Blocked suction lines – If your unit isn’t cooling as effectively as it used to, it could be due to blocked or damaged suction lines. This can also lead to your compressor overheating and failing.
  4. Electrical problems – An electrical failure can cause a buildup of acids that damage other parts in addition to the compressor.
  5. Inadequate oil lubricant – If there’s not enough lubricant running through the system, your compressor can’t work properly. To ensure you have the right type and enough lubricant, you should have your unit regularly maintained by a professional.
