  1. Try buying a new programmable thermostat. When you’re away from home, set the thermostat lower and program it to be higher for when you return. The smaller the temperature difference between the outside and inside, the more you’ll save.
  2. Keep objects that omit heat away from your thermostat. Lamps or household appliances can trick your thermostat into thinking it’s hotter than it really is. This will cause your AC to run longer and potentially waste your money.
  3. Schedule regular maintenance checks for your unit. Maintenance allows you to catch issues quickly. Catching an issue early can result in less of your hard-earned money spent. Vacuum and change out filters often to keep dust and debris to a minimum.
  4. Invest in mesh window screens. These screen intercept, up to 70% of the sun’s energy. This keeps your house cooler and your AC unit working less. Screens are especially efficient on the east and west facing windows.
  5. When you’re away from your home or out of a room, keep shades down and curtains closed to block out the heat from the sun’s rays.
  6. Keep your fans running on your home’s upper levels. Fans on medium to low speed will keep airflow consistent, allowing warm air escape your home faster.

  1. I just wrote about this myself. New homes are pretty well insulated and take care of a lot of things upon purchase. Older homes however can leave room for improvement. Screens are an excellent idea, also shades or indoor shutters can be a great investment for cooling in the hot months.
