Quick Troubleshooting Tips for a Broken Air Conditioner

air conditioning Ann Arbor

Does your AC not power on?

Does it seem like no cold air is blowing in your house?

If your air conditioner isn’t working, here are some troubleshooting tips:

  1. Double Check Your Thermostat – It might sound obvious, but make sure your thermostat is on and set 5-10 degrees cooler than the current temperature in your home. If nothing is showing on the display, check the batteries!
  2. Check Filter and Outdoor Blockage – Check that the air filter is clean by holding it up to a light. You should be able to see light through it! If your filter isn’t dirty, check the vents on your outside unit for debris or blockage that could be restricting air flow.
  3. Make Sure Power is Connected – Check your main electrical panel to make sure the unit has power running to it. See if any of the breakers have tripped. If they have, reset them. If your breakers are being tripped regularly, it could be a sign of problems with other components!

Why is Ice Building Up on My AC?

air conditioning Ann Arbor

Do you see ice forming on your air conditioner?

Does it sound like chunks of ice are dropping in your AC unit?

Ice on the copper refrigerant lines or outside of your AC unit might be the result of a refrigerant leak, low refrigerant levels, faulty parts, or restricted airflow. Check to see if the fan spins, your filter is clean, and that airflow isn’t blocked. If nothing looks visibly damaged, turn the power off to let the ice thaw and try your AC afterwards. If you suspect a refrigerant leak or malfunctioning evaporator coil, keep the power off and call a technician!
