What You Need To Know About Gas Boilers Verses Oil Boilers

Do you have high energy bills?

Are you looking to be more energy efficient?

Is it about time your old boiler gets replaced?

Whether you’re considering a gas boiler or an oil boiler, there are advantages and disadvantages to each. It’s important that you do the necessary research, and we’re here to help you get started.

Benefits and Drawbacks to Boilers in Ann Arbor

By switching to a gas boiler, you reduce emissions, including sulfur oxides, particulates, and mercury. According to Plant Engineering, “another attractive aspect of gas-fired boilers is that natural gas is a North American fuel, and far less sensitive to global political and economic fluctuations.” As a result, this allows you to pay less because shipping costs aren't involved. If you’re into saving the world from global warming, this may be the right choice for you!

Unlike natural gas, oil costs continue to rise, which causes your bill to increase. However, oil boilers are considered more mainstream as natural gas isn’t available everywhere in the United States.

Another thing to think about is your Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency (AFUE) rating.  According to EnergyStar.gov, “AFUE is a measure of how efficient the appliance is in converting the energy in its fuel to heat over the course of a typical year.” In most cases, a high AFUE percentage is good, but if your AFUE percentage is lower than 80%, that’s a sign that your boiler is inefficient, and you should replace it.

The minimum AFUE rating for types of boilers is the following:
  • gas-fired hot water boiler is 82%
  • gas-fired steam boiler is 80%
  • oil-fired hot water boiler is 84%
  • oil-fired steam boiler is 82%
So, which is better? Gas Boiler verses Oil Boiler? You be the judge. Do your research, and you’ll reach a conclusion right for you and your home. Remember – depending on where you live – you may not have a choice since natural gas isn’t available everywhere.
