Quick Troubleshooting Tips for a Broken Air Conditioner

air conditioning Ann Arbor

Does your AC not power on?

Does it seem like no cold air is blowing in your house?

If your air conditioner isn’t working, here are some troubleshooting tips:

  1. Double Check Your Thermostat – It might sound obvious, but make sure your thermostat is on and set 5-10 degrees cooler than the current temperature in your home. If nothing is showing on the display, check the batteries!
  2. Check Filter and Outdoor Blockage – Check that the air filter is clean by holding it up to a light. You should be able to see light through it! If your filter isn’t dirty, check the vents on your outside unit for debris or blockage that could be restricting air flow.
  3. Make Sure Power is Connected – Check your main electrical panel to make sure the unit has power running to it. See if any of the breakers have tripped. If they have, reset them. If your breakers are being tripped regularly, it could be a sign of problems with other components!

Why is Ice Building Up on My AC?

air conditioning Ann Arbor

Do you see ice forming on your air conditioner?

Does it sound like chunks of ice are dropping in your AC unit?

Ice on the copper refrigerant lines or outside of your AC unit might be the result of a refrigerant leak, low refrigerant levels, faulty parts, or restricted airflow. Check to see if the fan spins, your filter is clean, and that airflow isn’t blocked. If nothing looks visibly damaged, turn the power off to let the ice thaw and try your AC afterwards. If you suspect a refrigerant leak or malfunctioning evaporator coil, keep the power off and call a technician!

Improve Poor Circulation in Your Ann Arbor Home

Poor air circulation in your home could be hiding a bigger problem. Stagnant air or too much unregulated outside air goes deeper than just discomfort. A home that isn’t properly ventilated will leave moisture-rich air sitting in your rooms, potentially causing mold. Without ventilation, air containing bacteria and illness-causing pathogens may sit for a long time, trapped in the spaces you live. And if air moves too freely from outside your house to inside, that air might bring in all kinds of dirt and other particles, including allergens. If you think your home might be the victim of poor ventilation, read more here about how air conditioning repair for your Ann Arbor home can greatly improve the quality of your air.

There’s a lot we need to be protected from in the great outdoors: wind, rain, cold, heat, sun, snow, ice, and even the occasional bear! Our air conditioning units tend to be a little tougher. However, the biggest threat nature seems to pose for this appliance is trapped moisture. That’s where air conditioner covers come in handy!
air conditioning Ann Arbor

Air Conditioner Covers: Basics and Benefits
- Protect your air conditioner from falling and decomposing debris, like leaves, in autumn.
- Leaves can trap moisture and cause rust and corrosion, which will cut the life of your air conditioner short.
- Cover the top of your air conditioner and down the sides only six inches.
- Completely covering your AC will trap air and moisture and can also lead to corrosion.
- Covering your air conditioner at the end of every summer will extend the life of the unit and save you money.

When it comes to your AC in particular, a regular spring tune-up will save you money in the long-run:

  • Efficiency: If you don’t budget for the regular maintenance of your AC unit, the components will get bogged down with dirt and grime and run less efficiently. Instead of paying for your machine to work harder for the same results, get a tune-up for your AC and start seeing the savings generated by an efficient machine!
  • Preventative: Regular maintenance appointments for your AC will keep your unit running smoothly and help you avoid breakdowns that require costly repairs. Your maintenance technician will also let you know about the condition of the machine so you won’t be surprised by the cost of a repair or replacement that may be coming down the line for older appliances.
  • Extended Life: Scheduling regular maintenance tune-ups will keep your AC running longer. Operating at peak efficiency will put less stress on the machine and keep it going. A few extra years of quality operation should be well worth the cost of maintenance!

Keep Your Home Comfortable For Pets!

Looking for tips for cool pets as temperatures rise? Need some creative ways to keep your furry friends comfortable despite the heat?

Our pets seem to deal with hot days surprisingly well for most being covered in fur! Luckily with your help, they don’t just have to get by! You can help them be cool and comfortable all summer long.

Try a few of our tips for keeping pets comfortable at home this summer:

1. Exercise Timing

air conditioner ann arbor
Help keep your pet cool all day by timing their exercise right. Take your dog out in the morning or evening when it’s cooler and allow other animals to be lazy and undisturbed in the afternoon when it’s hottest.

2. Humidity Control

Most animals have different mechanisms to control body heat than we do, and high humidity tends to be particularly uncomfortable for our fur babies. Keep them indoors on humid days and consider dehumidifying the house if it’s an issue in the home.

3. Bath Time

A cool bath inside or out offers your pet an instantly satisfying retreat. Children’s pools are great for dogs and other pets that enjoy the outdoors. A lounge in a sink full of cool water can be great for birds, rabbits, and other small pets.

4. Spot Selection

On hot days, make sure your pet’s bed, crate, or cage is set up in a shady spot with ventilation so they can rest comfortably.

5. Water Access

Water is the key to staying cool. Make sure your pet has easy access to fresh water all day. Increase the chill factor with a few ice cubes or refrigerated water.

Put these tips to use today and your pet will thank you for it!

We know you and your pet will be feeling cooler with our strategies, but sometimes nothing beats good old air conditioning. If you’re interested in a new air conditioner in Ann Arbor this summer or need other ways to beat the heat, give us a call today!

3 Tips to Improve Your Home’s Indoor Air Quality (IAQ)

Looking for ways to improve the air quality in your home? Not sure where to begin?

When you’re cleaning your house, it’s easy to tell when your kitchen counters and bathroom sink are clean, not so much when you’re talking about the air. But that doesn’t mean the air quality in your home should be neglected! IAQ can be a crucial element to maintaining the comfort level of your home.

Below are three tips to significantly improve the indoor air quality of your home fast!
air conditioning repair Ann Arbor

1.      Avoid Chemicals

When cleaning surfaces or freshening the air in your home, avoid harsh chemicals as much as possible. Some of the standard products we’re accustomed to using to clean household surfaces are incredibly toxic and should only be used if completely necessary. Vinegar and baking soda solutions are a great alternative to many cleaning products and don’t pollute your air. Essential oils are better for air freshening than many commercial chemical products.

2.      Keep It Clean and Dry

Regularly cleaning your home and making sure it stays relatively dry will cut down on the potential for indoor allergens like mold and dust mites. Upgrading your vacuum to one with a HEPA filter will help you purge your fabrics of many allergens. Don’t forget to vacuum surfaces like couches and drapes. Wash your sheets and pillows frequently to get rid of allergens. Make sure your kitchen and bathroom are ventilated well to get rid of moisture and deter mold. If your basement or other rooms tend to be moist, you may also want to invest in a dehumidifier.

3.      Encourage Ventilation

Promote ventilation in your home to avoid staleness, stuffiness, and pockets of hot or cold air. Good ventilation complements your other efforts of keeping your house clean and dry and avoiding chemicals. To assure good ventilation, perform maintenance tasks on your HVAC system such as cleaning vents, ducts, and blowers. When outdoor air quality is good, you should also try to open windows to circulate air. Ceiling fans can also be useful for ventilation.

Our three tips for improved indoor air quality are simple and easy to remember, but they do cover a lot of ground. If you have any questions about IAQ and how to make it better in your home, give us a call! We are here to help with all your HVAC needs from furnace inspection to air conditioning repair in Ann Arbor. Contact us today!

Which Type of Thermostat is Right for You?

Wondering if you could benefit from an upgrade to your thermostat? Need more information to figure out what type of thermostat is best for you?
As the master control for the heating and cooling your Ann Arbor home, the thermostat is pretty important. But do you need anything more than to simply be able to set the temperature? If you’re interested in efficiency and saving some dollars on your electric bill, yes!
Learn the basic features of four main types of thermostats available today so you can make the ideal choice for your home.

Manual

heating and cooling Ann ArborThese thermostats feature a dial or switch you move manually to set your temperature. Nothing digital on these guys! Because the technology used in these thermostats to detect room temperature can be unreliable, manual thermostats aren’t the best option for precisely managing temps in your home.
You won’t run into many mechanical thermostats these days, except in homes that haven’t seen updates in a while. They aren’t much less expensive than the next model up, and because they aren’t too reliable, the savings may not be worth it.

Non-Programmable

One step up from the manual thermostats, a non-programmable thermostat uses an easily readable digital display to show you the current temperature, temperature setting, fan setting, and HVAC setting (Heat, A/C, or Off).
These units are more reliable than their manual predecessors, but if you set your system to different temperatures throughout the day, you’ll have to remember to do that on your own. This upgrade won’t cost you much and delivers on function and accuracy.

Programmable

Take efficiency to the next level with a programmable thermostat. There are a wide range of options available with this type of thermostat, from simply setting different temperatures during night and day to setting different temperatures for days of the week or even different areas in your house!
With a range of features also comes a range of prices. If you value maximum efficiency and would like to save on your monthly energy bill, spending a little more on your thermostat could definitely be worth it.

Wireless

heating and cooling ann arborHere is where thermostats get really techy! Taking temperature control to the max, wireless thermostats connect to your wireless network so you can make changes to your settings remotely. If you’re suddenly called out of town, you can set your house to a more economic temperature from the road.

The access comes at a price, however, about ten times as much as your basic manual thermostat. The added features are nice for efficiency, but if you don’t see much use for the ability to change your settings when away from the house, the upgrade might not benefit you much.

If you’re looking for a new thermostat or are considering any upgrades to your heating and cooling in Ann Arbor, we’re here to help. We can answer your questions, introduce you to new products, provide installation services, and more. Give us a call today!
