Quick Troubleshooting Tips for a Broken Air Conditioner

air conditioning Ann Arbor

Does your AC not power on?

Does it seem like no cold air is blowing in your house?

If your air conditioner isn’t working, here are some troubleshooting tips:

  1. Double Check Your Thermostat – It might sound obvious, but make sure your thermostat is on and set 5-10 degrees cooler than the current temperature in your home. If nothing is showing on the display, check the batteries!
  2. Check Filter and Outdoor Blockage – Check that the air filter is clean by holding it up to a light. You should be able to see light through it! If your filter isn’t dirty, check the vents on your outside unit for debris or blockage that could be restricting air flow.
  3. Make Sure Power is Connected – Check your main electrical panel to make sure the unit has power running to it. See if any of the breakers have tripped. If they have, reset them. If your breakers are being tripped regularly, it could be a sign of problems with other components!

Protect Your Air Conditioner From Theft!

Has there been a recent string of air conditioner thefts in your neighborhood?

Do you realize that air conditioning units are considered BIG money for thieves?

Are you worried about protecting your investment?

Police believe that thieves are stealing the copper and other metal parts from your AC unit and selling them as scrap. Is the price of copper going up? AC owners beware! The more copper is worth, the more likely thieves will swipe your AC unit for cash.

According to Angie’s List, there’re a few things you can do to make your air conditioning unit more resistant to theft:

  1. Securely lock the AC unit to its concrete pad
  2. Install an alarm that detects voltage interruptions
  3. Remove nearby landscaping or yard fencing if it obstructs the view of your unit
  4. Install or improve lighting around the air conditioning unit
  5. Spray or brush information in microdots on the copper tubing
  6. Engrave vital information on your AC

If you do one or more of the above tips to protect your unit, it may be less likely to be stolen. If you engraved your serial number on your copper tubing, then your stolen parts could be found. If you’re in need of a replacement unit, we can help you!

The odor may not be cause for alarm. However, the cause could range anywhere from nothing to worry about to a potentially harmful situation for your family. So, you should have it checked out immediately by a professional with experience in air conditioning repair!

Smell like mildew? Your a/c unit could be growing mildew or fungus where there’s lingering moisture.

Smell like rotten eggs? You could be smelling a decomposing animal that crawled into your ventilation during the winter months (ick!).

Smell like sewage? Your HVAC could be picking up the odor from a ruptured sewer vent and distributing it throughout your home.

Smell like a skunk? This usually means that gas is leaking from somewhere. If this happens you must get out of the house immediately and notify an expert HVAC technician.

Smell exhaust fumes? Your HVAC unit has fluid components that may leak out, and as a result you may smell exhaust fumes.

If you’re concerned about the quality of air your family is breathing, have an experienced HVAC contractor visit your home and evaluate your needs. Don’t wait until the last possible second until your system’s on the brink to call! We’re here to help you avoid those types of disasters!
